Quotations

Adventure is not outside man; it is within.
David Grayson

It is only when we truly know and understand that we have a limited time on earth and that we have no way of knowing when our time is up that we will begin to live each day to the fullest, as if it were the only one we had.
Elizabeth Kubler-Ross

Red Earth Expeditions

Simpson Desert Sunrise

Welcome to our website, the home of the Red Earth Expeditions adventure travel ‘family’.

We are a 4WD adventure tour company, based in Adelaide, whose philosophy is to take visitors in comfort and safety to remote Australia's most wild, most beautiful, most rugged and most remote places.

Are you looking for real outback adventure but not sure where or how to start?

Would you like to learn about our Australian outback’s culture and history?

Do you want an outback holiday to remember for a lifetime?

Picture yourself sitting around a campfire under a clear desert sky eating, drinking and sharing a yarn with your fellow travellers.

Our tours are for small groups only. This means you can have a real conversation with your guide and fellow travellers. Smaller groups are also kinder on the fragile environment we travel through.

Red Earth Expeditions can take you to those wide open spaces only the Australian outback offers. Come with us to our deserts and wilderness, where the feeling of isolation, remoteness and a sense of history and exploration are profound. Enjoy the safety net only an experienced tour operator can provide and the opportunity to travel with like minded adventurers. On our tours you will be escorted by one or two of our highly experienced guides. They are also skilled 4WD trainers who instruct our clients in the skills of four wheel driving. So you are in safe hands at all times.

Most of our tours are self catered, camping style, tag-along. This keeps your costs down but, we include events in each tour that others will ask you to pay for separately. We also offer a range of fully customised catered and accommodated tours for those who wish to be indulged or simply don’t have the camping gear. We all like to be spoilt a little and these tours definitely deliver. Our custom tours are for very small groups or couples and we design them specifically for you. One of our guides will act as your personal tour escort.

Don't have a 4WD? If you don’t own a 4WD we can organise the hire of a fully equipped one including everything you could possibly need for an enjoyable outback trip. We even offer a provedore service where we supply high quality Australian food and wine to your specific preferences. All you need to do is turn the key, switch on the UHF radio and tag-along with the group.

Our job is to take care of all the planning and organisation to ensure your journey is a truly enjoyable one.

Driving and recovery training includes off-road camper trailers. Our 4Wdriving and recovery training will shift your comfort zone from the uncertainty normal for a new 4WD owner to the point where you will have the skills and be able to say; I can do that. I’ve done it and I can do it again. Our off-road camper trailer training program will give you a through understanding of how to safely two off-road and have you planning your next adventure.

So why not join the Red Earth extended family for your next outback adventure or to learn the skills and gain the confidence to travel this wonderful country safely and get the best out of that 4WD of yours.

We'll put you on the right track!

Have a look at what we offer. Our photo album shows some of the amazing landscapes that we visit and the people that we meet - but remember that being there certainly beats even the best photograph.

Why Red Earth Expeditions?

We’ve been operating tours into remote areas for many years and our trainers and tour leaders have well over 75 years of combined experience. We are passionate about the country through which we travel. We feel strongly about the preservation of the outback’s fragile and special environments. We want as many people as possible to understand and appreciate just how wonderful remote Australia can be. The people and the animals of these places each have their own story to tell. All you need to do is be there!

With Red Earth Expeditions we offer you the spirit of adventure in comfort and safety. Our experience and attention to detail means that you can enjoy every inch of the places we visit. We take the worry out of the preparation and we lead you to places you wouldn’t otherwise see.

Lets face it, the success of our tours is all about great information, careful preparation and the backup support of the experienced Red Earth Expeditions tour guides (if things get tough).

Join us for an experience that might be a once-in-a-lifetime adventure or it may be your annual retreat into the remote outback. Either way, we offer you, in fact we challenge you, to discover our outback. Safety, comfort and support we will deliver. You need to bring a sense of adventure. Are you up for it?

2012 Calendar (3MB)

Looking back on 2011. It was a great year for outback travel courtesy of two consecutive years of flooding rain. The wildlife and flaura was about the best we have ever seen it and it certainly made for some great tours. Our Simpson Desert and Hay River tour gave us the opportunity to actually follow clear wheel tracks up the Hay rather than hopping from waypoint to waypoint as we have in previous years and it was certainly my personal highlight for the year. Sadly we continue to see our oubtack littered with rubbish of all kinds and more damaged windscreens and paintwork courtesy of those who refuse to slow down.

2012. This year we have added a new tour called The Macs, The Bight and a Bit of Beadell. Over three weeks we escort you around the best of Central Australia then head West along the Anne Beadell Highway to Volkes Hill Corner then South to the Great Australian Bight for some whale watching and other coastal past times.  We are planning a Cape York tour towards the end of the year as well. Its a long way from Adelaide but plenty to see on the way there and back. Easter at Mt Ive is becoming a regular feature of our calender but if you are interested better book early as camp sites and beds in the shearers quarters are popular and its first come first served. Spend some time with us practicing your off road skills, enjoy drinks and nibbles at Lake Gairdner as we watch the sun set and the view from Mt Ive is as great as the drive up and back is fun.

FJ Cruiser wins 4WD of the year. We supported the launch of the FJ, putting it over our test and training tracks and getting plenty of windscreen time on and off-road we came away pretty impressed with its all round capabilities. So its no surprise to us to see one of the best value for money 4WDs will this accolade. With any luck it may encourage Toyota to consider bringing in a diesel option sometime in the future, but the V6 has plenty of accessories including a decent long range tank so it should be on the "consider seriously" list for many.

Custom designed tours. Please contact us if there is a tour you would consider but is not on our list as yet. Watch this space for updates or subscribe to our updates.
